What is new in AEO
These are the moves that move AEO specifically.
- Entity recognition. Your brand name needs to be associated with your category in places AI models learn from - Wikipedia, Wikidata, structured About pages, LinkedIn company listing, with consistent descriptions across all.
- Citation by AI-trusted sources. Reddit threads, well-known publication archives, GitHub repos, ProductHunt, and AlternativeTo are weighted heavily. One real Reddit thread can outrank 50 directory listings.
- Answer-first content structure. AI assistants excerpt the first 50 words that directly answer a question. Bury the lead and you do not get cited.
- Bing matters again. ChatGPT browse mode uses Bing under the hood. Most businesses optimise only for Google and miss this entirely. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and use IndexNow.
- llms.txt files. A new convention for giving AI crawlers a machine-readable summary of your site. Early days, but cheap to ship and positions you well as adoption grows.
What to drop
- Keyword density tactics. AI assistants generate answers, they do not match keywords. Writing for keyword density produces content humans and AIs both hate.
- Thin comparison pages. "X vs Y - which is better" pages with no real verdict get filtered. Take a position or do not write the page.
- Low-tier directory blasts. Bulk submitting to hundreds of directories barely moves traditional SEO and does nothing for AEO. Quality of citation source matters way more than quantity.
