How to Rank in ChatGPT: The 2026 Guide
ChatGPT is a different ranking surface from Google. Here's the actual checklist for getting your business named in ChatGPT answers in 2026, in priority order.
If you've Googled how to rank in ChatGPT you've probably seen the same vague advice repeated everywhere: "add structured data" and "build authority". That's not wrong, but it's not the actual playbook either. ChatGPT ranks businesses through two distinct mechanisms - training-data ingestion and live retrieval via Bing - and the moves that work for each are different. This guide gives you both, in priority order.
The two ranking surfaces inside ChatGPT
Training data is what ChatGPT "knows" from its pre-training corpus. To get into it, your brand needs to appear repeatedly across high-trust sources that OpenAI trains on: Wikipedia, Wikidata, news sites, Reddit, podcast transcripts, YouTube auto-captions, and the open web crawled by Common Crawl.
Live retrieval is ChatGPT Browse and SearchGPT, which use Bing's search index in real time. To rank in those answers, you need to rank in Bing for the underlying query.
Most local businesses will get faster results from the live-retrieval side (Bing) than from training data (which compounds over months). Both matter.
The ranking checklist, in priority order
- 1. Claim and fully complete Bing Places for Business at bingplaces.com. ChatGPT Browse pulls from Bing's local index - without a Bing Places listing you are functionally invisible to ChatGPT Browse. (Most businesses skip this step. Don't.) - 30 minutes.
- 2. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools at bing.com/webmasters. Submit your XML sitemap. If Bing isn't indexing your pages, ChatGPT Browse can't retrieve them. - 20 minutes.
- 3. Add complete LocalBusiness JSON-LD to your site. Include `name`, `address`, `telephone`, `url`, `geo`, `priceRange`, `openingHours`, `aggregateRating` if you have reviews, and crucially `sameAs` linking to your Wikidata Q-number, Google Maps URL, Crunchbase, LinkedIn and every social profile. The `sameAs` array is the single most under-used schema field. - 1 hour.
- 4. Create a Wikidata entry at wikidata.org/Special:NewItem. Wikidata is part of every major LLM's training data and feeds Google's Knowledge Graph. A Wikidata Q-number is a permanent identifier for your business. - 1 hour.
- 5. Add your business to OpenStreetMap. OSM data feeds Apple Maps, Mapbox, and bulk LLM training data. - 30 minutes.
- 6. Submit your homepage and top 5 pages to the Wayback Machine. Snapshots get re-crawled into LLM training corpora - a snapshot today is a permanent record for any model trained later. - 15 minutes.
- 7. Build genuine Reddit presence in your trade subreddit. OpenAI signed a Reddit data partnership in 2024 and Reddit content is heavily present in LLM training via Common Crawl. Reddit is also a top-cited source in Perplexity and Bing Copilot answers. Build karma for 4 weeks before mentioning your business - Reddit shadow-bans new accounts that self-promote immediately.
- 8. Get on 3 podcasts in 90 days. Podcast transcripts are training-data gold. A 45-minute guest spot = ~6,000 words of training data with your business name mentioned ten or more times.
- 9. Earn one mention in a real news outlet. Local newspaper, trade publication, HARO/Qwoted reply that gets published. One news mention outranks fifty directory listings for LLM authority.
- 10. Run a 10-review acquisition sprint on Google and Trustpilot. Both feed Perplexity and Bing Copilot citations. Velocity + recency matter more than volume.
What does NOT work (and may hurt you)
- Stuffing your homepage with the words "ChatGPT" or "AI" - LLMs detect keyword stuffing and devalue.
- Buying backlinks from PBNs or low-quality directories - Bing penalises hard and ChatGPT Browse skips low-trust domains.
- Spamming Reddit with self-promotion - permanent shadow-ban and you lose every subreddit you'd want to be in.
- Auto-generating FAQ pages with AI tools - LLMs detect their own output and the pages get devalued.
- PO Boxes or virtual addresses - Bing detects NAP mismatch and drops you from local results entirely.
How long until you see results?
Bing Places + Bing Webmaster changes can show up in Bing Copilot and ChatGPT Browse answers within days to two weeks. Wikidata entries appear in some LLM answers within weeks; others (like ChatGPT itself) only after the model is re-trained.
Reddit, news mentions, and podcast appearances compound over 60-120 days. The training-data effects on ChatGPT specifically depend on OpenAI's training cadence - assume your investments today affect ChatGPT visibility in 3-9 months, while live-retrieval visibility (Browse, Copilot, Perplexity) moves in weeks.
The way to verify it's working: run the same 10 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Bing Copilot weekly and log whether your business is named. That's the only honest measurement - agency dashboards mostly don't track it.
